has hollywood gone pro-life?
a prominent trend in 2007 cinema was the surprise-pregnancy: children of men, waitress, knocked up, bella, august rush and juno all featured unmarried preganant women.  but maybe more intersting is what it didn’t feature: abortion.  in each movie the woman chose to keep her baby, sometimes opting for adoption, sometimes deciding to raise the child herself. even the king of crass, judd...

What Would Obama Say? - New York Times →
obama’s head speech writer is only four years older than me. maybe if we’d gotten to see obama speak yesterday, we would have been hearing Jon Favreau’s words.

the weather suddenly got really nasty on us, didn’t it. i can’t believe that just last night alan and i walked from his house to mine in 57 degree weather!  today the snow has accumulated about two inches in some places. oh well. while we wait for real spring to arrive, i thought it would be nice to look at pictures of beautiful places.  while i’m not sure this icelandic...

i’ve been listening to this series this week on my way to work. informative as to how muslim women interact with European culture, but I’m curious about Muslim women living stateside.

reelgeezer's movie reviews →
two octogenarians (fancy word for old people) with tons of experience in the movie business offer their takes on current cinema. i will never see a movie again without consulting their review first.

my boss just walked in on me while i was eating pixy stix. my first reaction was to be embarassed. i love that my job affords the opportunity to write e-mails that say stuff like this: “…or the sub-header that I included in the copy text for you (although, is a sub-head and an explanation paragraph in italics too much angling? Maybe.)” haha! sounds like i know what i’m...

“this is just like last year when anna nichole died, except for worse.”
– katie. she and i were together during anna nichole’s death almost a year ago, but today we’re in different cities. i made alan watch “ten things i hate about you” in honor of heath. i had no clue he has the entire movie memorized.

what i would like for my birthday →
michael pollan built this writing house for himself and then wrote about the process in the book, “a place of my own.” if someone built this for me then i could write about the process in my book, “thanks for building me a writing shed.” also, that person would get the inscription on the first page of the book. yay! everyone wins.

i don’t usually get upset when someone disagrees with my opinion on movies, music, clothing, food, etc. that’s fine. we all like different things (some comment about diversity making the world go round). yay! we’re all different but we’re all the same!  except, the whiners who are railing against juno can just relax, okay?  “but girls like that can’t really...

it's like i'm an x-man, but better
i’ve always had this sixth sense about fashion trends. well, okay. i’ve always been an early adopter. but seriously! the first time i remember doing this was way back in the sixth grade when i bought a terry cloth t-shirt with a huge tie-dye heart on the front. people thought i was crazy but what were they all wearing six months later? my proudest moments have been ballet flats, uggs,...

her good looks could have sailed a ship
i just listened to all of NPR’s “all songs considered” podcast featuring a live rilo kiley concert from the fall. as previously suspected, jenny lewis’s voice isn’t as strong live.  but i still love her.

i just looked at the list of things i want to do in 2008 and i think they’re really good. you don’t have to live in a certain place to have an exciting life. you just have to be an exciting person.

i don’t really love winter but i hope there is one more big snow before spring. this is because 1) i love the magical feeling you get when big, fat snowflakes are falling outside the window 2) the light is always amazing with all of that snow reflecting everywhere 3) we haven’t gone sledding yet.
